our story

a triumph of determined locals...

The group of twelve grew to nearly 40 and raised £1.5 million to begin work on the pub in April 2021.

Calculations were made, experts engaged, and gradually the true picture of what would be required to restore The White Lion to its former glory came together. The pub would need significant investment - not just a financial one, but almost incomprehensible levels of time, commitment, and planning.

Once the keys were exchanged and the twelve hopeful new owners of The White Lion examined their pub, it became clear what they had undertaken. Years of neglect meant the beautiful old building had fallen into disrepair.

This determined bunch raised £380,000 to rescue the pub. But this is just the beginning of The White Lion's story.

The very people it had served over its two centuries of existence - as a community hub, a local spot for a drink and a bite to eat, a place for celebration, and a landmark where memories had been made and shared through generations.

The White Lion has been part of the Hankelow community for over 200 years. So, it seems fitting that when the pub closed its doors in 2016, it was the community who stepped in.

Determined locals...

our story

After spending so long empty, it's finally time for The White Lion to be full of life again. We can't wait to welcome people from near and far as we work on writing the next 200 years of the story. Whether it's for an award-winning pint, an evening meal, or a special occasion, we're ready to welcome you!

The building marries the old with the new and represents the community's dedication to the pub and the hard work behind it.

Their contribution can be seen in The White Lion's operations, too, with the community ensuring sustainability is at the centre of the pub's ethos. It boasts 37 rooftop solar panels, a cutting-edge infrared ceiling and wall-mounted heating system, as well as an integrated building management efficiency scheme, and a rainwater harvesting tank. Not to mention what might be the first EV charging points installed in a pub in the area!

It had been expanded inside and out, with a new upstairs dining room, roof terrace, a cosy snug, and community room to compliment the rear extension. Pops of colour characterise the interior design - acting as a canvas to the pub's harmonious ensemble of original features, reclaimed furniture, contemporary finishes, and master craftsmanship from local trades including the main contractor, James Shenton.

The plans for The White Lion have been nothing short of spectacular. The pub has been restored from the ground up, with solid oak floors, a new roof, and bespoke hardwood windows and doors throughout.

Harmonious ensemble...

the plans

We're working hard to position the Lion into the heart of the community, but we also want to shout about it, we want people to come from far and wide, whether it's for and award-winning pint, evening meal or to experience one of our bank holiday weekend extravaganzas.
